In its physical form, Acupuncture is the use of fine, sterile, filiform needles strategically placed subcutaneously on the body to encourage the movement of Qi (pronounced “chee”) in the body.  The effects of Acupuncture can be deep and life changing.  The needles are placed along meridian, or flow lines, in which the Qi travels.

The Qi is the body’s driving force for any movement within the body.  It encourages the health of the immune system by keeping the blood circulating smooth and constant.  Acupuncture influences the Qi by either moving qi that is stuck, or gathering qi in an area that is weak.  Different types of pain and fatigue are a result of these types of qi and can be treated accordingly.

So after a thorough investigation, along with diagnostic testing of the pulse, tongue and channels (or meridians), the needles will be placed to make change in the qi by balancing its movement.

The balance is described in the terms yin and yang.  As the symbol suggests, yin and yang are never exclusive, but in a constant dance of relative engagement.  Yin is opposite of Yang and is considered the darker, heavier and more subdued side in relation to the brighter, lighter, energetic Yang.  These opposing forces keep the body in check and teach us how pathology might manifest itself in the human body.  Understanding Yin and Yang is essential for understanding the movement of Qi.

What does Acupuncture Treat?

While many people try acupuncture because other conventional treatments haven’t helped, others use Acupuncture as a preventative, health promoting maintenance.  Ultimately, Acupuncture can help reduce symptoms of almost any disease because it is not treating a disease.  Instead it is promoting circulation of energy within the body to strengthen the body’s defenses, or the immune system.
